Serra da Estrela
A Speaking Mountain — Six Languages
Venues & Discoveries
A Speaking Mountain · Curatorial Premise
Centro de Interpretação da Serra da Estrela · Seia · CISE
The premise: the mountain already has a language for each of its systems. CISE mapped six. Two films by Alexandre Delmar — land that performs rather than waits to be documented.
The Healing Mountain · Scientific Language
Penhas Douradas · Serra da Estrela · 1881 Scientific Expedition Trail · Helena Gonçalves Pinto
Stone shelters built for tuberculosis recovery. Before antibiotics, the wealthy came to breathe here. The mountain received patients before it received scientific names.
The Water Mountain · Hydro Language
Serra da Estrela · May 2026 · Hydrogeography Play Tour · Wild Swimming
A swim in water that has never reached the sea. Serra da Estrela feeds four major river systems across Portugal. Water beginning its journey from Portugal's highest ground.
The Cosmo Mountain · Cosmo Language
Travancinha Dark Sky Reserve · Serra da Estrela · Travancinha Observatory · Stargazing
Jupiter. Venus. The Moon. Through a telescope on a clear night. The dark sky was navigation before it was astronomy. The light you're seeing left its source years ago.
The Pastoral Mountain · Pastoral Language
Transhumance Trail · Serra da Estrela · Lagoa Comprida · Baldio — Common Grazing Land
The baldio — common grazing land shared by shepherds for centuries. The wool, the milk, the cheese, the dogs: all of it comes from this landscape, governed by collective agreement rather than private ownership.
The Fermentation Mountain · Fermentation Language
Carragozela · Serra da Estrela · Queijo da Serra da Estrela DOP · Quinta da Pena
Female cheesemakers handle the curd. Male shepherds manage the flocks. Dogs guard the routes. The cheese is not made — it is negotiated: between cardo thistle and sheep's milk, between species and genders, altitude and season.
The Interspecies Mountain · Transhumance Language
Transhumance Trail · Torre · Serra da Estrela · 2,000m · Red algae on late May snow · Chlamydomonas nivalis
Red snow — pink algae growing in ice at 2,000m in late May. Lichen on the granite beside it. The transhumance paths beneath. The mountain is not a landscape — it is a place of coexistence.
The Botanical Mountain · Plants Language
Lapa dos Dinheiros · CISE · Serra da Estrela · Fernanda Botelho — Edible & Medicinal Wild Plant Trail · Daniel Pereira — Plant Printmaking
30 species in three hours with Fernanda Botelho. Then Daniel Pereira pressed them into paper. Two passes through the same vocabulary.
The Burel Mountain · Textile Language
Manteigas · Serra da Estrela · Burel Factory
Bordaleira Serra da Estrela wool from transhumance flocks — felted and stretched in 19th-century industrial machinery. Burel is the mountain's textile language: movement, altitude, cold, and water, encoded in wool.
Conversation through Weaving · Dialogue
CISE · Serra da Estrela · Fernando P. Ferreira — Double Back Loom
Fernando designed this loom himself. Participants wove together with plants collected from the mountain walks — botanicals, mosses, fibers. Not a lesson but a space of dialogue: between hands, materials, and landscape.
What Came Home
Cardo thistle
Cynara cardunculus · dried flower · CISE guided transhumance trail
At Quinta da Pena: made into tea → coagulates sheep milk. Plant-based curdling.
Digitalis
Foxglove · Cardiac glycoside · Poisonous
The line between medicine and poison: measured in milligrams.
Lichen
Fernanda Botelho edible plant trail · species unconfirmed
Red algae on snow
Chlamydomonas nivalis · 2,000m · late May
The mountain's outermost life. Red snow.
Egyptian Yeast
Sourdough starter · gifted by Inês · 2026.5.30
Ancient yeast from Egypt → Serra da Estrela → Seoul. Still alive.
The mountain gave everything.
Research Notes
In Serra da Estrela, the mountain speaks. The 1881 Expedition Trail — stone shelters built for tuberculosis recovery. Before antibiotics, the wealthy came to breathe here. The mountain received patients before it received scientific names. A swim in water that has never reached the sea. Portugal's highest ground — where every major river begins. Jupiter. Venus. Lagoa Comprida: the baldio — common grazing land shared for centuries. Female cheesemakers, male shepherds, dogs, altitude, cardo thistle, sheep's milk. The cheese is not made — it is negotiated. 30 species in three hours with Fernanda Botelho. Then Daniel Pereira pressed them into paper. Two passes through the same vocabulary. Bordaleira Serra da Estrela wool, felted in 19th-century industrial machinery. Fernando P. Ferreira's self-designed double back loom — not a lesson, a conversation. The Healing Mountain.
