Seoul Guide

For First-Time Visitors · Art, Design & Materials

A neighbourhood guide to Seoul's art, design, and material culture — plus practical advice on arriving, getting around, and finding us.

When to Visit

Spring · Mar–May
10–20°C · Cherry blossoms peak early April
One of the best times to visit — mild temperatures, clear skies, and the city at its most photogenic. Pack a light jacket for evenings.
Summer · Jun–Aug
25–35°C · Hot & humid · Monsoon rains mid-June to mid-July
Bring light, breathable clothing. The monsoon (장마) brings heavy rain for several weeks — a light rain jacket or compact umbrella is essential.
Autumn · Sep–Nov
10–24°C · Foliage peaks mid-October · The best season
Consistently the finest time to visit Seoul — clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and spectacular autumn colour in the mountain parks. Seoraksan foliage is exceptional.
Winter · Dec–Feb
−5 to 5°C · Cold & dry · Occasional snow
Cold but manageable — the city stays lively with heated indoor spaces everywhere. Pack a proper winter coat and layers. Snow transforms the palaces and parks.

Space Building (공간 사옥) — Kim Swoo-geun, 1971
Korea's most celebrated work of modern architecture — interlocking brick and concrete volumes around a central void. Kim Swoo-geun shaped Korean modernism the way Kenzo Tange shaped Japan's. Now houses the Arumjigi cultural foundation. Insadong, a short walk from Gyeongbokgung.
Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) — Zaha Hadid Architects, 2014
Seoul's most iconic contemporary building — a seamless, curvilinear mass clad in 45,133 individually shaped aluminum panels. Houses design exhibitions, a marketplace, and a rooftop park. Dongdaemun, easily reached by subway.
Ewha Campus Complex — Dominique Perrault Architecture, 2008
A glass-walled valley cut into the Ewha Womans University campus — six storeys of building hidden below ground, experienced as an outdoor gorge descending between glass facades. 20,000 sqm invisible from outside. Free to visit. Sinchon area.
