Essential Korean dishes, vegan-friendly restaurants, and the best bakeries and coffee.
Korean Essentials
Korean BBQ — Samgyeopsal & Galbi (삼겹살 · 갈비)
Grilled pork belly or short ribs cooked at the table. Order with ssam (lettuce wraps) and banchan (side dishes). Try at Palsaik Samgyeopsal (팔색삼겹살) in Mapo or Maple Tree House (메이플 트리 하우스) in Itaewon.
Naengmyeon (냉면) — Cold Buckwheat Noodles
Served in chilled broth (물냉면) or with spicy sauce (비빔냉면). Perfect in summer. Wooraeok (우래옥) in Jung-gu is the classic — opened 1946.
Bibimbap (비빔밥) — Mixed Rice Bowl
Rice topped with vegetables, egg, and gochujang paste — mix it all together before eating. Available everywhere; Jeonju Bibimbap (전주비빔밥) is the regional classic.
Samgyetang (삼계탕) — Ginseng Chicken Soup
Whole small chicken stuffed with rice, ginseng, and jujube, slow-cooked in broth. Deeply nourishing. Tosokchon (토속촌) near Gyeongbokgung is the most famous spot.
Haemul Pajeon (해물파전) — Seafood Pancake
Crispy scallion and seafood pancake, best with makgeolli (막걸리, rice wine). Gwangjang Market (광장시장) in Jongno is the best place for street food versions.
Fine Dining Korean — Mingles & Jungsik
For a contemporary take on Korean cuisine, Mingles (밍글스) in Hannam and Jungsik (정식) in Gangnam are both two-star Michelin. Reserve well in advance.

Other Neighbourhoods
Parc Seoul (파크 서울) — Hannam

Fully vegan Korean-fusion restaurant. Creative seasonal menu. Itaewon's best vegan option.

Osegye Hyang (오세계향) — Insadong Vegetarian
Vegetarian Korean restaurant, good for lunch. Affordable set menus with traditional flavours.
Gluten-free note: rice-based dishes (bibimbap, sundubu jjigae, samgyetang) are naturally gluten-free. Be aware that Korean soy sauce (간장) typically contains wheat — ask for tamari or request dishes without soy sauce (간장 없이). Mandu (dumplings) and japchae glass noodles occasionally contain wheat flour.
Reservations: Most popular restaurants in Seoul use Catch Table (캐치테이블) for bookings. The app is in Korean only — Google Translate's camera mode works well for navigating it. For high-end spots, reserve at least a week ahead.
